Chicago: Introducing Allegra D'Souza as Billy Flynn!

Stepping into the role of slick lawyer Billy Flynn in Avcol's upcoming production of Chicago, High School Edition, is Head Prefect Allegra D'Souza.

A talented performer, in her five years at the College, Allegra has been a part of just about every music performance group going - including the Gospel Choir, Big Band, Five Spot (Jazz Combo), Symphony Orchestra - and she also is a mentor of students in the Jazz Academy.

"I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the opportunities that have been sent my way," she says, "like performing at KBB and the Tauranga National Youth Music Festival. But my biggest highlight would be winning Best Vocalist in Tauranga for the first time in 2023, as it was a goal I had had for years."

It's a goal that Allegra has ticked off two years running; this year she was also presented with the prestigious award which recognises her as the top jazz vocalist across all New Zealand secondary schools.

This year Allegra is bringing her considerable vocal and acting talents to the character of lawyer, Billy Flynn.

"Billy Flynn is a rather charismatic and sly character who fits the bill of 'sleazy lawyer' very well," she says. "He believes that justice in Chicago is “all a circus” and has a sharp tongue and quick wit, helping him defend even the worst clients in a court of law. He’s a really fun character to play. At times he’s a bit silly, very dramatic and enjoys being who he is unapologetically. You just get to have fun with his character."

Allegra says one of best things about being involved in the Avcol school shows is the people.

"I love the people in the show," she says. "Working with such talent and seeing the passion lots of people have for it is amazing. We get to put on something that will be seen by our family and friends and it’s so awesome seeing it come together, imagining the reactions on our whānau’s faces!"

The show opens in just two weeks' time, and tickets are selling fast.

"We’ve worked so hard over such a long time and we’re very lucky to have an incredible cast that is sure to blow everyone away, not to brag. We’ve got sparkles, singing, murder, dance, and a few guns, what’s not to love? So we’d love it if we could fill those seats and show everyone what we’ve got! Everyone’s support would mean the world to us."
