World Chemistry Olympiad bronze for Seivin

Adding to New Zealand's recent success on the world stage is Avondale College student Seivin Kim who has been awarded a Bronze Medal for her achievements as part of the New Zealand team competing at the World Chemistry Olympiad in Saudi Arabia this month!

The International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) is an annual competition for the world’s most talented chemistry students at the secondary school level. Nations around the world send a team of four students who are tested on their chemistry knowledge and skills in a five-hour laboratory practical exam and a five-hour written theoretical examination that are held on separate days.

Three hundred and thirty students from 90 countries took part at the IChO this year, with Seivin representing New Zealand along with three other students from Saint Kentigern's College and St Cuthbert's College. Collectively, the team came away with three Bronze medals and one Silver; a fantastic outcome for the team.

It was an amazing and unforgettable experience, says Seivin.

"The practical and theoretical exams were extremely challenging, despite having five hours to attempt the variety of puzzling problems. I look forward to come across similarly complex concepts in my future STEM career. I am very happy with my bronze medal and my New Zealand teammates' two bronze and one silver."

Alongside the intense competition, the Olympiad fosters international connections between like-minded students.

"Throughout the week, it was fun to meet students from all over the world and explore traditional and modern attractions in Riyadh," says Seivin. "Everyone was really nice and eager to share their culture with us."

"Thank you to everyone who supported me on my Olympiad journey. I strongly encourage Avondale College students to take part!"
